Challenge: Migrate complex Notes applications
Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers (WesCEF) operates chemical, energy, and fertilizer businesses that serve many markets in Australia and beyond. To support that mission, their 1,300 employees worked together in an IBM-based document management system.
But when IBM discontinued support for the platform, WesCEF faced a common challenge: what to do with their legacy Notes applications. They knew they needed to move away from Notes and Domino, but they found other content management platforms to be too expensive. They also weren’t keen on trying to re-create these complex applications on their own.
Solution: A low-code migration
Using the Domino and Notes Application Migrator solution, the client migrated their mission-critical Notes applications to Microsoft SQL Server. The project kicked off with a proof of concept that let them see the tool in action. Then they moved to a detailed migration plan with 8 phases, each with a well-defined set of deliverables.
Setback: An inefficient architecture
Early on in the project, it became clear that the client couldn’t just migrate their Notes applications as is. For the applications to run smoothly on SQL Server, they would need to refresh the application architecture also.
As an example, the original search algorithm didn’t work as well after migration. As more and more data was imported into the tool from the old system, search results started to get sluggish. So the Domino and Notes Application Migrator solution team took on the challenge of re-designing the search algorithm from the ground up.
Results: A new architecture, faster search, and better reporting
In less than a year, the customer was able to re-architect their mission-critical Notes applications and migrate them to run on an existing Microsoft SQL database.
Now, the client’s search results are lightning fast. Plus, they can use their existing SQL skills to query the database and create reports about their content, which was not possible in their legacy Domino environment
