Minimizing & Simplifying Your Domino Infrastructure CostsFebruary 9, 2011
With our infrastructure in place, we began devising a plan to start manually moving users. We developed a well-defined checklist of 35 different key checkpoints that needed to be accomplished in order to achieve our goal. As the objective was to use local field staff to complete this process, we handed the user move and desktop updates over to field services. We had really good people doing this job, but not all field engineers followed our checkpoints list completely, nor did they follow it in the proper sequence every time. With this manual domain migration approach, when a problem arose, we spent 2-3 hours with the field engineer or the end user trying to resolve the problem. It was a very time consuming and highly inefficient process.
There had to be a better way!
So, I decided to research ways to simplify this manual migration process and I came across Binary Tree’s CMT for Domains, Servers, Users, and Desktops. I was in luck! It seemed like Binary Tree’s software was going to be the perfect tool to address my needs. Plus, Lotusphere 2003 was right around the corner and I was attending and I wanted to see the tool in action. I arranged a product demonstration with Binary Tree’s now CTO, Vadim Gringolts. To say I was amazed with everything this tool could do was an understatement. So, the answer to my question, “Is Binary Tree’s CMT for Domains all it’s cracked up to be?” was “Yes!” and now it was time to get management buy in and approval to move forward.
Next came the big question, "How do I convince management to approve this purchase?” In order to prove to management that CMT for Domains was the best migration solution for the company, I built a justification calculator and the decision to move forward with CMT for Domains for our migration project was quickly approved. Here’s why:
- CMT for Domains Cost: $56,000/€41,000 (5-month project)
- Manual Migration Cost: $375,000/€274,000 (2-year project)
- Cost Savings: $320,000/€234,000
The CMT for Domains solution provides customers with the ability to simplify the process of consolidating Domino domains, splitting domains, consolidating Domino infrastructures and reducing the costs associated with Domino, in an effective manner with the least impact to the user. With the economic situation as it is today and as organizations begin looking for ways to improve efficiencies, a sure way to assist in keeping costs down is to do a review of company Information Technology services. IT is typically a cost center for many organizations; any way to reduce costs associated with IT helps the profitability of the organization. This may be in terms of moving to new technologies, elimination of redundancy, or consolidation of the environment into a smaller footprint.
Whether considering a Domino migration to consolidate or split your existing Domino infrastructure, move to LotusLive, or move to Microsoft Exchange, an investment into CMT For Domains can greatly ease the entire processes surrounding these daunting tasks and minimize the number of Domino servers required within your infrastructure which can, in return, save significant costs in Domino Server licensing.
