The essence of an application migration project is to move applications from an environment in which they functioned to a new environment. The main goals of the migration are:
· to accomplish the move as quickly as possible with minimal disruption
· to maintain existing functions and meet existing business requirements
· to maintain content structure and data fidelity
· to maintain the state of data in workflow and review processes
Achieving such goals requires a great deal of expertise and experience.
Application migration is not easy, but it is manageable. The migration effort is made up of several phases. The last three phases may actually be run concurrently in large application environments.
The assessment phase begins with a detailed analysis of the existing application environment using our state of the art CMT Inspector for Lotus Notes software. The information collected will identify which applications should be migrated and the complexity of the design and data will help identify the target platform.
Using CMT for SharePoint, this phase migrates applications that are similar in design to standard Notes templates. These applications often have similar templates in the target migration platform. The most common templates include Discussion, Document Library, TeamRoom, and QuickPlace.
This phase involves the selection of a number of applications meeting pre-defined criteria. The applications have their designs transformed to the target platform and the data migrated to the new applications.
This phase is sometimes divided into sub-phases. Applications with simple designs are often quickly transformed and migrated. The knowledge gained from these migrations is carried forward into the migration of more complex applications. This knowledge continues to build and move forward throughout the migration process. The most complex applications may be migrated into third-party off-the-shelf applications or into custom-built applications.
