A Binary Tree White Paper:

Benefits of a Streamlined Migration to Exchange 2010

Over the years, Microsoft Exchange Server has become a more capable and complex product. If your organization still uses Exchange Server 2003, the jump to Exchange 2010 will be a significant undertaking. Between the requirement for the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 and the inability to perform an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2003 and earlier versions, you should treat the move to Exchange Server 2010 as a migration project.

Most customers planning their migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 have one goal in common: Complete the job quickly. However, they also want the process to be as painless as possible. In many cases, it can be difficult to achieve both goals from the perspectives of end users and administrators.

Migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 has its challenges, including:
  • User mailboxes are offline during the migration (no access available)
  • Powershell commands must be scripted manually to submit multiple migration requests for processing
  • Mailbox move completion tracking and migration processing throughput and reporting do not exist (must be recorded manually via spreadsheets)
This white paper discusses...
  • The manual migration methods available using the Exchange Management Console and PowerShell for migrating from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2010 within the same Active Directory (AD) forest
  • How to streamline an Exchange migration
  • The benefits of streamlining an Exchange migration
