Corporate Citizenship

Binary Tree strives to make a difference in our communities and our world. In addition to assisting our customers in their efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their messaging systems, we also support the work of charitable organizations with discounts on our software and donations to their causes.

Supporting Environmental Conservation

Binary Tree makes concerted efforts to conserve our environment. We rely on tele-conferencing and web-conferencing instead of in-person meetings whenever feasible. In addition, a by-product of helping our customers to migrate their messaging systems is that they inevitably also reduce the number of servers they rely on for messaging. And less servers results in less power usage. Whether our customers are consolidating their mail environment or moving it to a new on-premises or cloud-based system, the number of servers they use is typically reduced quite significantly.

Software Discounts for Charitable Organizations

Binary Tree offers discounts on our software for charitable organizations. Organizations like The Hospital for Sick Children (www.sickkids.ca) have taken advantage of our discounts for charities. For more information on this program, please contact our sales team at sales@binarytree.com.

Corporate Giving and Grants

In May 2008, the 'Binary Tree Gives Back' program was launched. Each month, Binary Tree makes charitable contributions to non-profit organizations in areas such as health, education, environment and animal protection. Together with our continuing efforts to promote responsible ways to help the environment, our donations seek to improve the quality of life in the communities where our employees live and work, as well as those less fortunate than ours.

Here is a summary of some of our more recent contributions.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America
November 2009
For over a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been helping change kids’ perspectives and giving them the opportunity to reach their potential. It all started in 1904, when a young New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter was seeing more and more boys come through his courtroom. He recognized that caring adults could help many of these kids stay out of trouble, and he set out to find volunteers. That marked the beginning of the Big Brothers movement.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America help children realize their potential and build their futures and Binary Tree is thrilled to be able to help! The November 2009 donation went to this very worthwhile cause. To read more about the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America program, please visit their website:

Seas IT
July 2009
This month, Binary Tree’s donation went to an organization called Seas IT, recommended by Binary Tree’s Director of Sales, Carl Baumann. A very close friend of Carl’s called Todd McGovern has been fighting Stage 4 Colon Cancer. At the time of his diagnosis (on his honeymoon during the Summer 2004) doctors found 30 tumors throughput his body. He was given 3-6 months to live.

The doctors were perplexed as Todd did not fit the atypical mold for someone with colon cancer. He was active and athletic; he was young and had no history of colon cancer within his family. After getting over the initial shock, Todd had a decision to make: he could start dying or he could find start living. Todd is a fighter and he decided to start living. When the initial shock finally past, Todd and his wife Amanda founded their own non-profit organization called Seas-It (www.seasit.org) which promotes recovery through recreation for cancer patients who seek to recapture positive thinking and to regain control over their lives. Binary Tree is honored to help Seas IT with their endeavors. If you know someone fighting Cancer, please visit the Seat IT org website to read more about this very worthwhile organization and see how they may be able to help: www.seasit.org.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
June 2009
The June donation went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They are the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.

The support of individuals and organizations helps ensure that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will continue its lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children. It costs $1.6 million a day to operate St. Jude, and public donations provide more than 70 percent of their funding. But the most important reason is, in the words of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas: "No child should die in the dawn of life."

Melanoma Foundation of New England
April 2009
On Monday April 20th, the brother and sister in law of one of Binary Tree’s Solution Architects, Perry Hiltz - took to the hills, and streets of Boston to run in the 2009 Boston Marathon. (This was his sister in law Mary Theresa's second running while his brother in law Randy's, first). Mary Theresa qualified to run this marathon by completing a marathon run in Canada and Randy qualified by raising funds on behalf of the Melanoma Foundation of New England.

In order to qualify for the race, Randy had to raise at least $3,000, however at the time of the race he had raised more than $4,700. Unfortunately Randy pulled a muscle in his calf during the race but that did not deter him and he completed the race! Well done Randy and Mary Theresa – Binary Tree is thrilled to donate towards the Melanoma Foundation of New England’s cause! Wildlife Conservation Society
March 2009
We’re big advocates of wildlife conservation at Binary Tree and we are honored to donate the March funds towards the Wildlife Conservation Society, who’s mission is to save wildlife and wild places across the globe.

Their story began in the early 1900’s when they successfully helped the American bison recover on the Western Plains. Today, they protect many of the world’s iconic creatures here and abroad, including gorillas in the Congo, tigers in India, wolverines in the Yellowstone Rockies, and ocean giants in our world’s amazing seascapes.

During their 115 years, they have forged the power of their global conservation work and the management of their five parks in New York City to create the world’s most comprehensive conservation organization. They currently manage about 500 conservation projects in more than 60 countries; and educate millions of visitors at their five living institutions in New York City on important issues affecting our planet. Their parks include: the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and Queens Zoo.
With a commitment to protect 25 percent of the world’s biodiversity, they address four of the biggest issues facing wildlife and wild places: climate change; natural resource exploitation; the connection between wildlife health and human health; and the sustainable development of human livelihoods. While taking on these issues, they manage more than 200 million acres of protected lands around the world, with more than 200 scientists on staff. Tix for Tots
February 2009
Some experiences in childhood are unforgettable. Remember the first time you went to a ballpark and heard the crack of the bat in response to the opening pitch? How about sitting raptly in the audience in the dark, hushed and waiting fo r the curtain to rise on your first viewing of A Christmas Carol? Some fans recall the roots of a lifelong passion beginning with the squeaking shoes and hustling on the hardwood floors of a college basketball arena.

Whatever your passion, it started somewhere and being able to experience new things through cultural events opened your mind, made you think, got you in shape or helped you join a team – or maybe just let you escape for a few hours.

Tix for Tots is a new way to help kids in the Minneapolis - St. Paul area who would otherwise not have the chance to experience those events. It is simply a network - a relationship that allows unused seats for sporting events or cultural events be donated to mentoring organizations and distributed, so that kids get a chance to escape, or learn, or develop a passion. The February 2009 charity donation went to this very worthwhile cause. Whether you have tickets you can donate to Tix for Tots or would like to help fund their endeavors, please visit their website to find out more: http://www.tixfortots.org.
